What is good? Visual Research

Łukasz Ociepka
Zabrze, Poland
Memorial Museum of Siberia - branding

I have documented this because it is pretty much what I am doing. A part from I will be curating the exhibition too. Ociepka only designed the branding and identity for the museum. Although I say I am curating the exhibition too the more I research it the more I realise the task is pretty huge. The branding alone is a big task. I need to start researching artist and designers that could feature under the umbrella of perception and if I struggle to find them I might to have amend my brief.

I need to start telling the story of the creation of the work I do. I need to create a book to put my work in context and also show the design decisions I have made from typography to colour swatches.

These images are good reference as they are giving me ideas for products I could potentially and realistically create. Also really well photographed a laid out on the photography background.

I have never created signage for a museum/gallery before so the more examples a signage I can get the better.

Although I like the graphic style used what I think is lacking is the creativity and design decisions such as real navigation. I think I can create way-finding that could be really useful in actually guiding people around the gallery and informing them precisely and efficiently.

I think generally people like to feel in control even when they are doing something as simple as navigating around a building. No one likes being lost or confused, so this is why I think it is relevant to properly instruct the audience. The demographic I am looking at are predominately adults which means they don't have infinite amount of time on hand - I know I don't and I know people around me don't either. So effective layout design which is efficient can only be positive. People are free to ponder at their own pace don't get me wrong.

Definitely need to figure out how I am going to show my signage and how I am going to document it. Would I mock this up or would I find somewhere I could utilise a poster stand?

The real strength in this work is that Ociepka has firstly designed a visually great brand but also really well documented it. It's really cool how he has photographed/ mocked up all of his work. Every product has been appropriately shown even the exhibition building further down the page.

I would of never of thought to make a name badge for the employees. It again is relevant and visually looks professional. The man is clearly quite happy to have his face on that badge.

Tickets on the surface play a small part in running the gallery, but myself, when I attend an event I like to keep the ticket as a personal record; if the ticket is really well designed I makes me happy. Although this may because I am in the creative industry and I have an appreciation for print. My audience research suggested that most people who view art galleries and museums are not predominately in the creative industry, but this doesn't stop me producing something I would keep!
