TASK
Find five Graphic Designers that, in your opinion, produce work that in some way relates to each of the following themes, taken from the level 4 lecture programme-

You must find five Graphic Designers for each of the above themes, making a list of 45 Graphic Designers in total.

Write an explanation of why you think each designers work relates to the lecture theme and also include examples of their work and links to online research / articles about the designer.

Modernism:
Wim Crouwel - Dutch designer typical use of modern design, use of Helvetica and sans serif typefaces, grid systems and legibility.

Jim Brair -
vrije tijd-blije tijd. Another Dutch designer. Simple legible poster. Really graphic illustration on the characters. Simple colour scheme.
  
Mike Joyce. Joyce has done a series of swiss style posters redoing flyers for classic hardcore punk and indie shows in the modernist style. He used grid systems, transparency and scale - http://grainedit.com/2012/01/11/swissted/


Erik Nitsche - Swiss born modernist designer. Again uses scale and sans serif typefaces which are highly legible. This image is from Gerneral Dynmics poster for the Convair 880 commercial jetliner

Walter Bangerter - Helvetica, grisa, simple layouts which are easy to read. No decoration.

 Weingart Wolfgang - 'He was the father of New Wave, an experimental movement in graphic design that emerged in the late 1960′s,  As a reaction to the uniformity of  ’Swiss Style’. Using ‘Swiss Typography’ as a starting point, Weingart exploited phototypesetting and the technology of film to create work that was radically different at the time.'

Dan Friedman - Described as a radical modernist and new wave designer. He uses a mix of modernism and postmodernism in this image below.

 Aske/ Sicksystems Design - 'Sicksystems has evolved from initially being a graffiti crew to being the showcase of Aske’s graphic, illustration, and art work.'


CT - Another Italian street artist. CT's work is really graphic even though it exists mostly outdoors. I really like the colours he uses. Especially in the second image across the door.

Steve Powers -vNew York City artist who at one time wrote graffiti in Philadelphia and New York under the name ESPO.

Steve Powers’ imprint is all over Philadelphia—20 blocks of the city, in fact. That’s where Powers, along with a team of 25 artists, conceived and developed his latest public art project, A Love Letter for You, spanning more than 50 city rooftops.   

Shepard fairery - American contemporary graphic designer, he emerged from the skateboarding scene. He became famous from his 'Andre the giant has a posse' which was a sticker campaign. He began is career as a street artist and now has a clothing label.


Film Theory

Olly Moss - Doesn't usually do artwork for films but he does remake classics and films he likes. Usually using the idea of the film or some significant or iconic imagery to create the covers. Here you can see he has used the cross for the oil pump from 'There Will Be Blood' because christianity plays a big part within the film.

Stefan Sagmeister - A well known Graphic designer and typographer based in New York he owns his own practice, Sagmeister INC. A very high end designer who has worked with big clients such as The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith and Lou Reed.

Russell Shaw - 'Russell Shaw is an independent, Atlanta-based designer. His concentrations include illustration, graphic design, logo and branding design, book layouts, user interface/experience, and video. Everyone knows the I love NY design. Glaser is highly celebrated and has won lots of awards - In 2004 he was selected for the lifetime achievement award of the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum. He opened Milton Glaser, Inc. in 1974, and continues to produce in many fields of design still.

A History of Type

Doyald Young - Was a typography instructor and logotype designer at Art Center College of Design. The majority of his typefaces are mostly script, decorated and contain serif.
 
  


Boa Mistura - Perspective typography. I really want to do this somewhere and so does Sam Lane. We will get around to doing it soon. 

These two images were done in Brazil with the help of the local children!

Jon Contino - I really like Contino's stuff. Especially his typographyinspired illustrations. You can see the influence of growing up in New York has had on him. His typography is usually hand drawn and digitally rendered which I'm into. I think I'll start doing some work in this process.
 





'Soulseven is the creative studio of Minneapolis based designer Sam Soulek. His current creative focus is fairly broad, including: logos & identity systems, brand campaigns, interactive applications, retail environments, packaging, promotions, posters'

Soulek has some really poster with interesting type.


Erik Spiekermann - 'information architect, type designer and author of books and articles on type and typography. Two of his typefaces, FF Meta and ITC Officina, are considered to be modern classics.  In 1979 he founded MetaDesign and in 1989 FontShop. He is behind the design of well-know brands such as Audi, Bosch, VW, German Railways and Heidelberg Printing, among others; information systems for Berlin Transit and Düsseldorf Airport and for publications like The Economist. '

Allan Peters - Allan Peters is a Senior Art Director from Minneapolis with over nine years of experience. His work has been recognized by Effie, AdFed, AIGA, Print, How, ID, Davey and Rockport. Most of his work is advertising and branding based. I've used his work before.

I don't particularly like this.

Benny Gold - Just read Benny golds 'story' on his website and he seems like a really sound guy. He explains how he started off working for other people after graduating and after working for an in house company for a while he was getting no satisfaction out of it so he did his own thing. Starting from one sticker which he stuck around his town.

Benoit Ollive - Graduate from France. He has some creative and thoughtful work. I like his CV. Its interesting id give him a job.

ALLAN AUBRY - is an artistic director, graphic designer and illustrator.
  He lives in Paris. 'this city inspires me our my work.
I'll let you see my world through my various works and illustrations.'

Dan Cassaro -  'Dan Cassaro is a designer, animator, and illustrator living and working in Brooklyn, New York. He puts words on paper so that they might be accountable for themselves. Young Jerks is his one-man design studio specializing in custom type, illustration, logo design, and powerful 70's rock and roll. ' He generally trys to communicate a message or point of view through his practice.

Best Made Company is dedicated to equipping customers with quality tools and dependable information that they can use and pass down for generations. We seek to empower people to get outside, use their hands and in doing so embark on a life of fulfilling projects and lasting experiences. 

Although Best Made isnt specifically graphic design their products are visually really strong and the whole brand and concept is great. I REALLY WANT AN AXE.
